Hello November!

As the leaves continue to fall, and the air gets crisper we can feel November’s arrival. It is a time of change, reflection, appreciation, and the beginning of the busy holiday season. With all those things in mind, I thought it would be fun to take a look at the wisdom of some weather lore this month.

What is Weather Lore?

Weather lore is folklore and/or superstitions which attempt to make sense of and predict weather based on peoples observations of the world around them. It includes a variety of proverbs and sayings that have been passed down through generations.

Ten Examples of Fall Weather Lore:

1.) “Flowers in bloom late in autumn indicate a bad winter.”

2.) “If trees show buds in November, the winter will last until May.”

3.) “Thunder in November indicates a fertile year to come.”

4.) “If there be ice in November that will bear a duck, there will be nothing thereafter but sleet and muck.”

5.) “A heavy November snow will last till April.”

6.) “If you see pigs gathering sticks or leaves in the fall, there is a bad winter ahead.”

7.) “The brighter the leaves are in the fall, the snowier and colder the coming winter will be,”

8.) “When smoke descends, good weather ends.”

9.) “Ring around the moon, storm coming soon.”

10.) “See how high the hornet’s nest, ’twill tell how high the snow will rest.”

The Reasoning

  • Animals:

(6.) and (10.) Insect/animal behavior has long been linked to changes in weather. If you notice nests built higher than usual, or in more sheltered areas it could possibly mean a harsh winter may be coming. Other indicators of the winter to come include the thickness of animal coats, amount of body fat, and where they hide their food caches.

  • Plants:

(1.) and (2.) Plants were often used as weather predictors. When plants bloom out of season, it could be a sign of stresses caused by unusual weather patterns. This may be an indicator of a change from the typical season cycle, which may indicate a more severe winter. (7.) Along the same vein, weather conditions during the fall such as temperature and moisture levels can affect how bright leaves are, but according to U.S. Department of Agriculture their coloring is not a good indicator of weather conditions to come.

  • The Sky:

The color of the sky, the appearance of the clouds and the changes in humidity can be a good indicator of weather changes that are coming. (9.) Halos are used to predict rain or snow as the appearance of the ring is usually caused when light refracts through high-cirrus clouds, which commonly precede a storm system. (8.) The instability of pressure and humidity stop smoke from rising quickly and causes it to curl downward. This can help to indicate the onset of cold weather. (

3.) The idea that thunder late in the fall will indicate a good growing season stems from the idea that a storm will bring beneficial moisture to the soil. (4.) and (5.) If the snow is especially heavy or you see thick ice early in November, it was sometimes seen as a sign of a long, cold winter ahead. Predictions of longer-term outcomes caused by early weather changes were most likely far less dependable than the shorter-term forecasts.

Final thoughts

Before there were scientific instruments to help interpret the changing weather, farmers, fisherman , sailors, and hunters needed a way to predict how mild or harsh changes would be. Their lives very often depended on it. So, they looked for signs in nature. The clouds, animals, and plants gave them clues as to what to expect from the weather. Some of these early weather observations have truth at their core and are supported by modern science, while others seem to be no more than fun poems and rhymes.

This isn’t the first time we have touched based on the topic of weather lore but I had a lot of fun expanding my knowledge on the subject. If you are interested in reading more about it you can find the original article here: season-mythology-and-weather-lore.

I hope that you enjoyed this creativity post! Stay safe and keep being awesome.
